fahrrad adventures: Check back for updates

Oh bicycles....

Saturday- We rented the bicycles which we will be using for the next two weeks. Ten minutes later, we discovered that most of the students hadn't riden bikes on a normal basis for at least five years! We did a scavenger hunt throughout the city with the bikes, which you can read about in our individual posts :-).

Sunday- Traveled to a town Northeast of us for a church service. It was a lovely little church, but despite the size of the church, it wasn't too small to have beautiful, professional music. We heard Bach Cantata 29, complete with an orchestra of period instrumenets. Sarah spoke to the continuist and was allowed to play her Viola de Gamba! After the service, we talked to very kind (and patient with our studentlevel German) choir members, who were very interested in us and our studies.

Dr. Keith, Kym, Krista, MaryAnn, and Sarah all desided to travel a bit farther to an afternoon concert on our bikes. The scenery was amazing and the ride was beautiful. We got a little lost between the last two towns and ended up literally riding through fields. The flowers were wonderful, the sand we rode through was not.

We did make it to the concert (Buxtehüde and Telemann) and then rode to the DB and took the train back to Magdeburg, since there was no way we were riding over 20 miles back! We ended up bike riding over 26 miles (about 39km) during the entire trip.

It was Sunday... in Germany that means that nothing is open... aka we were hungry at 19:30 when we finally made it back to the city. We ate at an Italian Resteraunt which had very good food!

Tuesday 5. Juni. 2007

Today our biking aventures took us several places. The first was a tour of the city given by Christoph, who is a student of history in Magdeburg. We rode around the city for three hours learning about some of the history of the city, through the buildings that we saw. Some of the most interesting places we saw: The oldest church in the city, Kloster; the only crane that moves around a curve in a building; and a hub bruecke (drawbridge), infact, the oldest train drawbridge in Europe.

Later in the evening Dr. Keith, Chuan, Sarah, MaryAnn, and Kym biked a bit more than 15 miles traveling south and back on the Elberadweg, a bike path that follows the Elbe River from the North Sea to Prague.

We saw some wonderful scenery, some deer, watched the sunset over the trees and fields, and saw the fog settle into the meadows.

On the way home we stopped at a biergarten (beer garden) to celebrate good times (come on!). Ironically, the biergarten is located at an old church (since 1997). Even the inside of the church was remodeled like a resturant. Where the alter once stood was a bar, complete with a cute bartender! No pews here people, just tables and good times. PROST!!!!! (cheers). Upon leaving, we raced home to try and beat the sun to bed at 22:45.
